Our Fire Prevention Bureau had 578 fire inspections conducted by the department, 348 by the bureau itself and 231 shift inspections. Of course, this included Gilles Sweet School, the Recreation & Community Center and the structures at Westgate. The department is always in the process of reviewing plans to update or create strategies for all of the new buildings and existing structures within the City.

Our firefighters are well-trained and ready for all emergencies that occur in our community. An ongoing state-mandated training program allows all members, especially the youngest and newly hired, to fine-tune and sharpen their firefighting skills.

As for our paramedic skills, each member of this Fire Department receives continuing education through our We Share Program.  Paramedics are recertified every two years in ALS (Advanced Life Support.) This ensures the best qualified Paramedics for the best ambulatory service possible.

Westshore Dispatch remains successful in unifying all participating communities by dispatching Fire Departments to respond to emergency situations.

In union with the Senior Life Office, the Fire Department began a Safety Lock Box Program. This program assists safety forceds in reaching residents during an emergency.  The Fire Department installs a lockbox (2" wide by 4" long) onto the top of the door jam on the side or back door.  This box holds a key and emergency information. Should you require assistance from emergency personnel, a master key and personal medical information are available to police, fire or EMS if a resident were unable to answer the door. This system helps by allowing faster response to the emergency and to prevent damage to the home.

The information sheet contains information such as the name and phone of the physician, medical conditions, medications, allergies, hospital preference and information on pets, if applicable.  Interested senior residents should call the Senior Life Office at 440-356-4437 to arrange installation by the Fire Department. All information is completely confidential and available only to our emergency response units.

We will continue to strive to protect and serve our supportive city residents both in an emergency situation and by providing non-emergency services. We will always have "Life Safety" as our ultimate goal.
